What is LiFi (Light Fidelity) Technology?

The term LiFi was first introduced by Prof. Harald Haas (Germany) founder of LiFi during a 2011 TEDGlobal talk in Edinburgh. It is a very interesting concept.

Because this technology uses light rays, the speed of data transfer is very high, which is approximately 224 Gbps. by this speed you can easily download large size files of videos, and can browse without disturbance.

- LED Lamp: data from the internet is used to modulate the intensity of the LED light sources.
- Photo Detector: the photodetector picks up the signal.
- workflow of LiFi: In this technology, the data is fed into the LED light bulb (with signal processing technology) and then sends data (embedded in its beam) at high speeds to the photodetector (photodiode).
- The slight changes in the accelerated dimming of the LED bulbs are then translated into an electrical signal by the receiver.
- The signal is then transformed back to a binary data stream that the user can know as a site, video and audio application that allows devices to operate on the internet.
ADVANTAGES of LiFi:
- LI-Fi will also have a major effect on the internet of things, with data being transmitted at even higher speeds and many more devices being able to communicate with each other.
- Li-Fi is safer than Wi-Fi, due to its shorter range.
- Since it does not pollute, it can be termed a green device-to-device communication technology on the Internet of Things (loT).
- Li-Fi systems consume less electricity.
LIMITATIONS OF Li-Fi
- Because visible light can not pass through opaque objects and the contact requires a line of sight, its range will remain very limited, to begin with.
- More efficient LED bulbs would need to be positioned at different locations to enjoy maximum connectivity.
- Li-Fi is likely to experience interference from external light sources, such as sunlight and lamps, and obstructions in the transmission path, and can thus cause communication interruptions.
Lifi is known as Light Fidelity.
Wifi is known as Wireless Fidelity.

In Lifi, data is transmitted with the use of light produced by LED bulbs.
In Wifi, data is transmitted with the use of radio waves and a wifi router.

Lifi does not have interference issues like with radio transmission.
Wifi is accompanied by interference issues near access points.

Lifi can be used in a variety of environments such as airlines and sea exploration.

Advantages
Lifi works well in dense regions and can transmit through salt water. It has less interference.
Wifi does not work well in dense regions; it cannot pass through water and inference is more.
Privacy Issues
Lifi cannot pass through walls, so data is protected and more secure.
Wifi signals cannot be blocked bay walls, so signal needs to use more secure techniques to protect data

In Lifi, data can be transferred at 1Gbps.
In Wifi, data can be transferred at 150Mbps with the use of WLAN -11n.
Frequency Range
The frequency that could be used in Lifi is ten thousand times the frequency of the radio spectrum. The frequency range used is between 400 and 800 terahertz on the visible light range.
The frequency spectrum that could be used in Wifi is 2.4GHz, 4.9 GHz, and 5GHz.
Range (Distance)
In Lifi, the range that data could be transferred is 10 m.
In Wifi, the data transfer is about 32 meters, but this will vary according to the antenna and transmitter power.

Lifi uses LED, photodetector and lamp driver.
Wifi uses a router and a subscriber device.
